Hawaiian paniolo ropes a steer at the loading pen. The paniolo then swam the steer to a waiting whaleboat where it was tied to the side. When 3 or 4 steers were tied to each side of the whaleboat, the boat would either row or motor to the steamer anchored out in the bay. A diver at the steamer would attach a sling around each steer. They were then hoisted up one by one onto the deck of the steamer for transport to market in Honolulu. |
