Haleakala Crater Maui
Haleakala means in Hawaiian " house of the sun" Haleakala rises 10,023 feet above sea level. The crater or valley below is about 7 miles across 2 miles wide and almost 2,600 feet deep. In Hawaiian folklore, the Haleakala crater was home to the grandmother of the demigod Maui. legend has it the Maui's grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to lengthen the day.
